Autistic Poetry: Ballad of a Black Sheep

For some families, autistics aren’t the children parents ordered…

Not the kid you brag about at PTA. You cheer for at little league. The class president. The future executive.

The one you want to speak at your funeral…

We’re not Greta Thunberg.

We’re the ones who didn’t live up to our potential. Never made anything of ourselves. The one no one brings up on Thanksgiving…

The Black Sheep.

Works for me.

Another of my written Songs without a Singer. (More here.)

Ballad of a Black Sheep

VERSE
Never owned a jock. Never had a brain.
Belonged to a clique called, “The Boyz with No Name.”
Counselor looked my way, ya know his eyes would soften…
Eyeball me now, cut ya 3 ways:
Long, deep & often…

CHORUS
Never met a black sheep wasn’t born pearly white,
Never met a preacher who really was all right.
Cards yer dealt might be up to chance.
Just own who you are,
Then dance….

VERSE
Brother’s a dick. Burned thru 2 wives.
Years since he’s been in his kid’s lives.
(spoken) Hey!
I ain’t lazy, crazy, anything horrible,
Just kinda hazy on the benies of normal.

CHORUS
Never met a black sheep wasn’t born pearly white,
Never met a preacher who really was all right.
Cards yer dealt might be up to chance.
Just own who you are,
Then dance….

BRIDGE
YOU — get ahead.
I — know what I want.
I — choose laffs & love.
YOU — run for debutante….

VERSE
Criminal’s just a man–who knows the world too well.
The president? A man who knows — but he aint gonna fucking tell….
I ain’t Mother Theresa — or even Robin Hood.
(whispered) Cuz honey, I’m hungry, I steal.
Who worked the carnie right? Gotta wait for the Final Reveal….

CHORUS
Never met a black sheep wasn’t born pearly white,
Never met that preacher you say really is all right.
Game may be rigged. There’s always that chance.
Just own who you are,
Then dance….

  1. 😊 Yep, I can put a tick of attainment to quite a few of these black sheep qualities. We survived, that’s a mark of success I reckon.
