Remember: Autists & Violence
I’ve been working on a long-term project. A series of portraits of autists who experienced violence at the hands of the police, strangers, friends… family.
It sprang out of work on my two Facebook groups, “Missing While Autistic” & “Trigger Warning: Autism & the Police.” I read horrific stories of abuse, abandonment… and violent death… nearly every day.
While the “epidemic” of autistic kids is almost certainly a myth…
The global pandemic of violence toward autists of all ages, races, religions decidedly is not.

Palestine.
On 30 May 2020, Eyad al-Hallaq, a 32-year-old autistic Palestinian man, was shot and killed by Israeli Police after not stopping when ordered to do. Police “neutralized” Halaq during the chase with seven shots fired in his direction. More information.

UK police in Bristol tasered Paul, who had a mental age of seven, and charged him with assaulting an officer – in a case that collapsed when his mother discovered CCTV of the incident. More information.
